When Do You Need To Repair or Replace The Throttle Body

Throttle Body

Any vehicle requires perfect mixture of air and fuel to run smoothly and effortlessly. The duty of controlling appropriate amount of air and fuel is taken by air intake system of the vehicles. One essential component of the air intake system is the Throttle Body which adjusts the amount of air entering the engine. If any fault or defect occurs in the throttle body, it fails to perform its significant function of controlling amount of air and fuel mixture, which ultimately lead to failure of engine. Sometimes, the throttle body is not out of order, it is just covered with oil and soot that can be fixed easily by cleaning it with specific sprays. However, sometimes it may get damaged that can only be fixed by a professional mechanic.

Reasons Of Failing Throttle Body:

A throttle body may starts functioning abnormally due to following reasons:

  • Electrical Issues:

In latest cars, all engine parts are connected via computer to get accurate amount of everything. Sometimes the electrical connections that carry information from different engine parts to the car’s computer get defected due to various reasons. If the electrical connections taking information to the throttle body get defected, then the throttle body will not be able to regulate the air/fuel mixture correctly. This is not a very serious issue and can be repaired easily.

  • Deposition of Dirt and Oil:

Sometimes dirt, oil or carbon deposits on the inner side of throttle body or housing. This deposition causes interruption in the smooth flow of air and fuel mixture causing delay in engine functions. Again, this is not a very difficult situation, any professional mechanic is completely aware of the ways to deal with this issue effectively.

  • Poor Idling:

In some cases, the cars take long time to start and stop, this delay could be linked to problems in throttle body. It could happen when the throttle body plate open and close very rapidly. As this stops enough air to reach its destination.

  • Vacuum Leak:

Vacuum leak can interfere in normal flow of air/fuel mixture which leads to pressure problems in the throttle body. Vacuum leak can result in high idling as it allowed large amount of air to get into the air intake system. High idling also put bad effect on the engine and malfunction it. Vacuum leak could also be caused by wrongly adjusted throttle stop. A throttle stop is an important component of throttle body which controls the maximum and minimum position of the throttle body plate to be closed or opened.

  • Intense Damage:

If there is intense damage to the throttle body, then it will no longer be able to repair again. In that situation, only option left is replacement of old throttle body with a new one. Replacing a throttle body is a bit expensive when compared it with repairing but once replaced it could work fine for years and give smooth, problem free drive to the owner.
